To her embarrassment, after changing into her bathing suit, Alissa had somehow fallen asleep in her room. She woke disoriented. The sounds of seagulls and waves crashing to shore reminded her where she was. Florida with her little sister. She flung an arm over her eyes and took in deep breaths. They were supposed to be at the beach. Had she ruined the afternoon?

Why was she so tired? Over the last few months, she’d been energized by the business. The kids were thriving. Was it just being away and relaxed, or was there something else? Like another pregnancy?

With some effort, she got up and went into the bathroom. She splashed water over her face and took a long look at herself in the mirror. Her complexion had an underlying green tone. Dark circles under her eyes were evidence of how utterly exhausted she was. Just like the other times. The other pregnancies. Could she be? No, not again. Not now when things were going so well at work. Couldn’t be. This fatigue was because of the difference in time zones and all the extra hours she and Jed had been putting into the businesses.

Still groggy, she went to find her sister. She found her curled up in a chair sketching in a pad.

“I’m so sorry,” Alissa said. “I can’t believe I fell asleep.”

She smiled up at her. “Don’t worry about it. This is our weekend. We can sleep all we want.”

“I hate to miss any moments with you, though.”

Hailey set aside her sketch pad and stood, then stretched and yawned. “How about a walk on the beach? If you want, we can take a dip too, since we have our suits on.”

She agreed and followed Hailey out to the patio. The sun was lower than before her nap but still warm on her skin. They both kept their cover-ups on over their suits but got rid of their sandals before walking across the sand to the edge of the crashing waves. As they walked, arm in arm as they had when they were little girls, they chatted more about Hailey’s last few months. The more she heard about what Hailey and Nick had taken on, the more impressed she became. Clearly her sister had it together. She didn’t need Alissa’s worries or concerns. Her sister was a force in the world.

“What about you?” Hailey asked. “Tell me everything. And this time no one can interrupt us by waking from their naps.”

“True.” She breathed in the scent of seaweed and salt. Tension eased slightly between her shoulder blades. “I love it here. Thank you for inviting me. I still can’t believe we managed to pull this weekend together.”

“Me either. If not for our husbands, it would never have happened.”

“I sometimes look over at Jed and can’t believe he’s mine. Do you ever feel that way?”

“Oh, yes. All the time.” Hailey touched her fingers to her hair. “When I came to Nick about the kids, I didn’t know what he would say. I shouldn’t have doubted him, I guess, but it’s such a big thing to take on.
